Exploring the neural encoding of non-instrumental information processing

We are proud to announce that our paper on the neural encoding of non-instrumental information, led by Maja Brydevall and Daniel Bennett, has finally been published in Scientific Reports!

In this work, we explored how the brain encodes information that can't be used to increase the probability of obtaining rewards. Surprisingly, despite this information being useless ("non-instrumental"), humans are willing to sacrifice money to obtain it. Here we present evidence for strong similarities in neural signals between non-instrumental information processing and reward processing, possibly shedding light on the underlying mechanism.
